First Light

First Light

The first light in the morning is one of my favorite times to be on the water. This day was no exception. I look forward to seeing the first light in the vast Ten Thousand Islands of the great Florida Everglades soon.

I have been a Shelling Guide to Cayo Costa State Park since 1995. Many people know me as the Shelling Guide and Captain with Captiva Cruises over the past 20 years. In 2016 I began solely offering private small boat charters to the islands of Pine Island Sound including Cayo Costa State Park, Cabbage Key, Useppa Island, Pine Island and North Captiva. I am a certified Florida Master Naturalist, licensed USCG Captain, avocational photographer, seashell enthusiast and passionate about the history, people and culture of Southwest Florida, especially Cayo Costa. I volunteer as a member of Friends of Cayo Costa State Park and have great respect for the heritage of Cayo Costa. My goal is to provide guests with an overall experience and appreciation for the waters, islands, shells, plants, marine life, wildlife, history and people of this unique area of Southwest Florida.

Good luck in the Everglades, Brian. Maybe you'll beat your Alphabet Cone record! What was it, 90?

Good luck Brian! See if you can beat your record Alphabet Cone total. Wasn't it in the 90's?

Thanks coach! It was 92 cones, kinda crazy. I will be happy to just find the one cone…. the one with rings around it. I am going to some places down south where I haven't been before. It is the place this shell is rumoured to be. You will be the first one I tell if I find one.

Heading south for part of the winter sounds like a good idea! Have a great time. Your sunrise photos are awesome. We've had some pretty spectacular sunsets lately. The sun's shining today in this neck of the woods….. It's a good day!

Mike, it is the gold-banded cone conus spurius aureofasciatus. This shell is very very rare…less than 20 found ever.

These photos take me to my 'happy place' on this cold and blustery Minnesota morning. I had a dream last night that I was shelling. Was sad to wake up and realize it was just a dream. Soon, though!
